Kenya is one of Africa’s most iconic destinations, renowned for its outstanding wildlife, dramatic landscapes and warm hospitality. From the vast savannahs of the Maasai Mara, home to the Great Migration, to the snow-capped peaks of Mount Kenya, the country offers unforgettable safari experiences. Visitors can spot the Big Five in world-famous national parks, enjoy cultural encounters with local communities, or unwind on the palm-fringed beaches of the Indian Ocean in places such as Diani Beach and Watamu. Whether you’re looking for a classic safari, a family adventure or a combined safari and beach holiday, Kenya delivers an extraordinary variety of experiences.

Kenya climate overview

Kenya lies on the equator, so temperatures remain relatively consistent throughout the year. However, altitude plays a key role in determining local climate.

  • Average daytime temperatures:

    • Nairobi & Highlands: 18–25°C

    • Safari regions & coastal areas: 25–32°C

Evenings can be cool in higher-altitude regions, particularly from June to August, while coastal areas remain warm and humid year-round.

Rainy seasons in Kenya

Kenya has two distinct rainy seasons which can influence travel plans.

  • Long rains: April to May

  • Short rains: November

Rain typically falls in short, heavy bursts rather than all day, but during the long rains some safari tracks can become muddy and more difficult to access.

Best time for safari in Kenya

The best time for safari in Kenya is during the drier months, when wildlife is easier to spot and road conditions are at their best.

July to October

  • Dry weather and excellent visibility

  • Animals gather around water sources

  • Peak safari season in major parks

  • The Great Migration crosses the Maasai Mara (usually July–September)

January to March

  • Hot, dry conditions

  • Fewer visitors than peak season

  • Excellent for birdlife and sightings of newborn animals

Best time to visit Kenya for beaches

Kenya’s Indian Ocean coastline offers warm sea temperatures and good conditions for much of the year.

  • December to March: Hot, sunny and ideal for beach holidays

  • July to October: Slightly cooler, dry and very comfortable

Coastal resorts in Mombasa, Diani Beach and Watamu are popular additions to a safari itinerary.
